UNBREAKABLE

UNFORGETTABLE PERFORMANCE WITH PERSONAL STORIES FROM FIVE PANTSULA DANCERS FROM SOWETO (12+)

In a combination of genuine acting, lively African dance styles, humour, and impressive visuals, the Soweto Skeleton Movers from Johannesburg tell their personal life stories. Despite many setbacks and wrong temptations that crossed their paths, these five dancers are 'unbreakable'.

The audience is taken on a joyful and overwhelming journey by the Soweto Skeleton Movers through a mix of singing, street scenes, captivating visuals, and their 'skeleton pantsula,' a blend of traditional South African street dance (Pantsula) and 'bone breaking.' All of this is supported by a contemporary soundtrack featuring melodic Afrohouse tunes and pumping Amapiano beats. Welcome to Soweto!

Unbreakable is a promising collaboration between Rotterdam choreographer Lloyd Marengo, London theatre director Jonzi D, and the five explosively energetic dancers of the Soweto Skeleton Movers, who have long outgrown their humble status as street performers and now perform worldwide.

Playing period: April/October/November 2024

There is no doubt about the talent, skill, and dedication of the five amazing dancers. They pour their heart and soul into the play. This alone would keep you watching, but add the exuberant footwork and physically challenging acrobatic contortions, and you can't take your eyes off them," – Seeing Dance, UK.

"It's amazing how their stories, without text, are understandable and especially tangible for everyone," – Theatre- en Musicaljournaal, Netherlands.

"The audience for Unbreakable gets what they came for: lightning-fast footwork, amazing hat tricks, great beats, acrobatics," – NRC, Netherlands.

ABOUT THE MAKERS

Dancers Topollo Ntulo, Jabulani Manyoni, Molefi Rakitla, Junior Hlongwane, and Lerato Motsepe command attention with their exceptional flexibility, serpentine movements, astonishing acrobatic footwork, and the humour they bring to their performances. In the past, they depended on the generosity of tourists visiting Nelson Mandela's house in Soweto for their daily bread. One of these tourists was Jonzi D, the artistic director of Breakin' Convention in London. He immediately brought the five to Britain. Since then, they have long outgrown their humble status as street performers and now perform worldwide.
