Father Figure

10 years after Father Father, choreographer Lloyd Marengo returns to theatres with its successor: Father Figure.  A compact, "in your face" dance performance showcases the struggle of 4 b-boys and a percussionist with the theme of the father figure. Soulful breakdance scenes, repetitive rhythms, and dynamic and still images make Father Figure an impressive dance collage.

Father Figure is a production by Lloydscompany. Under the flag of Lloydscompany, dancers/upcoming urban makers and the underground battle scene come together. The company produces performances, thus bridging the gap between the street and the stage.

Founder Lloyd Marengo grew up in the raw Rotterdam of the 1980s and learnt to dance on the streets. In the 1990s, his hangout in Rotterdam West became the epicentre of hip-hop. Lloyd made a splash with the 010 B-boys, who achieved worldwide success and put Rotterdam hip-hop and street culture on the map. Lloyd is one of the founders of the Hip Hop House; he has worked with Scapino and Conny Janssen Danst, among others, and was featured during the Dutch Dance Days.

Father Figure can still be seen in Dutch theatres until the end of June.

Public Reactions

"The five men were perfectly in sync, with their specific skills, including one of the crew with amazing finger-snapping; the emotional charge of their story, without being specifically mentioned, left the audience breathless."

– Kees Blijleven (Artistic Director of Theatre de Krakeling, Amsterdam)

"I was very moved by the individual interpretations of what fatherhood means to each person. It was also beautiful how the musician conveyed these personal stories through sound. Vulnerable, pure, and playful. It's beautiful how different dancers can come together on such a personal theme!

– Whenna Wilkers

"The performance was so beautiful, I'm so glad I was able to see it." It was so much more than I thought. A bizarrely beautiful experience.

The performance was really cool. Energy vol. The tension was also good. The way the dancers seek each other out is inspiring. The combination with the percussionist works very well. In short, this was a very enjoyable performance to watch.

– B-Boy Dietje

"Father Figure is a really cool show. Especially the combination of the percussionist and the dancers is powerful.

– Stefan Seedorf

THE CAST

KEVIN THOMPSON

Kevin is a b-boy from Suriname and is also active as a filmmaker in addition to dancing. He describes his style as a fusion of all the dance styles he possesses, but with breakdancing as the foundation.

For Kevin, anyone can be a father figure: "You can choose who your father figure is based on the relationship."

NOURI EL MAZOUGHI

Nouri is a French b-boy who describes himself as a versatile dancer, which allows him to move in his own way.

For Nouri, a father figure is someone who makes great sacrifices for his family and shares his wisdom.

OSCAR STARINK

Oscar is a well-known b-boy from the underground battle scene and is part of the Underdogz Crew from Utrecht. He describes his style as controlled, deliberate, and fluid, with breaking as its foundation.

And we also asked Oscar for a description of a father figure: "As someone who takes on a caring role and sets an example. A father figure leads and inspires the newer generation.

POM ARNOLD

He has been seen, among other things, on Holland's Got Talent, THE IMMORTAL WORLD TOUR by Cirque Du Soleil (USA), and has also performed in Dutch theatres with various theatrical productions. He describes his style as minimalist, clean, and with a strong foundation.

For Pom, a father figure is a man who takes on his responsibilities as a dad. Raising children, with or without setbacks. "A role model, a pillar of support," Pom said.

JULINHO PIMENTEL

Our final cast member isn't a b-boy, but no less important, Julinho is our multi-instrumentalist who musically accompanies the b-boys during the performance.

Julinho is originally from Brazil and grew up in a musical family. His musical career began at the age of eight; he performed with his family – Kriya Familia – and came to the Netherlands in 1999 for a tour. In 2001, they returned for a new tour and decided to stay in the Netherlands.

This isn't the first time Julinho and Lloyd have worked together; for example, Julinho was in the play Father Father 10 years ago. But what is a father figure to Julinho? "A father figure plays a very important role in a child's life; he shows the way to where it is peaceful and loving."
