POWER

Do you know what the power is in your story? POWER is a double bill that explores origins, strength and creativity from two perspectives, through two powerful performances.

Both performances take you on the personal journey that the creators have undertaken in their lives. Be inspired by their resilience and discover the power in your own story.

Performance period: March to May 2024

POWER | DOUBLE BILL PART I

Still going strong

Maikel Walker and Junior Bosila Banya (B-Boy Junior) are among the best-known pioneers in the breakdance scene. Twenty-three years ago, B-Boy Junior saw Maikel dancing and recognised a reflection of himself. This is because they are both differently-abled: they both live with the effects of polio. Yet they demonstrate their immense strength through the most energetic and challenging moves. As a result, they have become a true source of inspiration for each other and for many others.

Marvel at Maikel Walker live on stage and B-Boy Junior in a powerful virtual performance. Together, in this show, they share their life stories from childhood to the present day.

Trouw: “At the age of 55, Maikel Walker is still a role model for dancers in the hip-hop scene”.

POWER | DOUBLE BILL PART II

I am my ancestors wildest dreams

Through the eyes of choreographer Sheree Lenting, you’ll witness the wildest dreams of her foremothers (ancestral mothers). In the performance, she takes you on a journey through their as yet untold stories from the past, present and future.

She questions, explores and cherishes her female lineage. The dancers Cicely Wijnaldum and Ciara Hiwat take you on a journey into what it means to be a woman by portraying their stories through their bodies. With the POWER, wisdom and love of their female ancestors as their heritage, they look to the future with confidence.

Trouw: “Power 2 – I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams, by choreographer Sheree Lenting, is also a celebration of empowerment.”
