Meet the creator: Ibrah Jackson

Ibrah Silas Jackson (born 2000) is a director and choreographer from Rotterdam with roots in Uganda. The foundation of his creations lies in hip-hop culture, but he has also gained knowledge of various movement disciplines such as modern, funky, and African cultural styles. The core of his work consists of telling stories with visual art and movement.

Ibrah has directed several short films and music videos, is a dancer with the Ghetto Funk Collective, and began choreographing theatre productions in 2021.

Lloydscompany sees Ibrah as a very talented creator who works not only in dance but also in visuals and film. Ibrah is typically a maker who doesn't follow the beaten paths or easily write plans, but just does with the few resources he has.

UNTIL THE QUIET COMES

Together with three young dancers (Juan Jose Markes, Angel Felix, and Sirak Solomoon Areguy), he created the short performance "Until the Quiet Comes" under the banner of Create4, about the experiences of a young man of colour. Lloyds Company supported him in this both artistically and financially, providing him and the dancers with an initial budget to create this performance. He performed this new piece during the Breakin' Convention Netherlands Tour.

THE HEREDITARY

At the Breakin' Convention, he participated in Back to the Lab and previewed The Hereditary. This duet with Angel Felix explores the deeply ingrained, toxic masculinity passed down from generation to generation; sometimes actively through the presence of a father, and other times precisely through the absence of a father figure. In a physical dialogue mixed with hip-hop dance, they share their experiences and learn from both their differences and their similarities.

He performed this at Breakin' Convention London, a groundbreaking hip-hop theatre festival, in May 2024. This was very well received.

ATTITUDES

Thanks to Until the Quiet Comes, Lloydscompany nominated Ibrah Jackson for the Creative Europe Project Attitudes. The jury was enthusiastic and selected Ibrah to participate in Attitudes for two years with dancers Juan and Angel. There, he further developed his work The Hereditary and performed in six countries: Kampnagel in Hamburg (DE), Dansekapellet in Copenhagen (DK), Malmö Dance Week in Malmö (SE), Norrlandsoperan in Umeå (SE), and at the HOP Festival in Barcelona (ES).
