Still going strong
Maikel Walker and Junior Bosila Banya (B-Boy Junior from France), are two pioneers in the breakdance scene. Both are a true inspiration for many dancers worldwide and for each other.
Maikel is a pioneer among the first generation of breakdancers. When B-Boy Junior saw him dancing in 2001, he found his ‘mirror image’, because both are differently-abled and are now role models for many. Junior is one of the most iconic characters in the breaking scene, known for his ‘inhuman strength’ and ‘handstand acrobatics’. Maikel is a ‘planche master’ and there are even moves named after him. Admire Maikel Walker live on stage and B-Boy Junior in a powerful virtual way. Together they share their life stories from childhood to the present in this performance.
Quotes
“In the meantime, veterans Walker and Junior, who are widely respected in the scene, demonstrate that they are still playing their part. Not only with their floor moves, but also with their specialties” (NRC, The Netherlands).
“At 55, Maikel Walker is still a role model for dancers in the hip-hop scene” (Trouw, The Netherlands).
“Both, however, did not let unwilling legs slow them down and perfected breakdance techniques such as planking – Walker spinning on elbows and fingertips with his body stretched horizontally – and freezes, seemingly impossible handstands by Junior” (Volkskrant, The Netherlands).
Double bill
POWER 1 was part of a double bill that toured in The Netherlands in 2024. Two powerful performances, both personal journeys of the makers, highlight origins, strength and creativity from two different perspectives. “The two diametrically different duets in this diptych – one by men, one by women – both exude perseverance, physical tensile strength and mental elasticity” (Volkskrant, The Netherlands).
